Yes you need to be driven and focussed on generating sales but the way you go about achieving that is crucial!
Softly softly, empathy, compassion, humility, warmth, digression are all adjectives that describe the type of person needed to succeed in this unusual role.

Business Development Manager -1x Southampton 1x London 1x Essex
Job Type: Permanent
Start Date: Immediate
Salary: Basic c£27,000
Reference: PV GCBDM3
£27k basic, £70k OTE, (top earners achieve in excess of £100k) Choice car, Blackberry, Laptop, pension and benefits.
How often do you get drawn in by OTE figures like these only to find out at the interview that they’ve only been achieved once, years ago by someone who had been with the business for an age? Annoying isn’t it
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT ONE OF THOSE OCCASSIONS!
My client is a market leading household name in the security business, providing a broad portfolio of products and services including electronic security solutions, manned guarding, mobile patrol, out sourcing of business processes and facilities management.
Due to expansion (and that’s absolutely genuine as well) they are now looking to compliment the southern sales team with a number of key new appointments.
Now, make no mistake, this is not an easy job. The first six months will entail a lot of training and a lot of coal face business development work – even though you’ll be the newbie you’ll still have targets and you willbe expected to achieve them. Once trained and established your typical remit will see you prospecting, presenting and closing on a daily weekly - monthly basis at board level with all sectors of commerce and industry; we all need security after all.
If you find this type of culture daunting, please don’t apply; it’s not for you.
However, if you’re reading this and thinking this is for me, get me in there I’m definitely £100k material I want to here from you.
The basic criteria I need to see from you apart from the right type of character are as follows…
· 3 years of evidence of sales success – P60, pay slips, league tables etc
· Service sales experience – people who have sold products historically tend to fail in this role
· First class listening skills and closing ability
· Super competitive – you hate losing / coming second
So you can see, to a large degree what you have sold is very much secondary to who you are and how successful you’ve been to date and how successful you are going to be from this point forward.
Interested?
In the first instance please forward a word copy of your CV to gavin.chalmers@bberecruitment.co.uk, give me two hours and then follow the email up with a call to 07876764385 to discuss your application.
Sales Engineer - Midlands
Job Type: Permanent
Start Date: Immediate
Salary: Basic c£30,000k
Reference: PV GCAFM1
C£30k basic, + bonus, company car, mobile phone etc.
Now here’s an opportunity for a long term career opportunity. My client is a small, profitable, privately owned business who specialise in the manufacture, supply and service of agricultural machinery. Turn over is in the low millions, they employ under 20 people and are now in there third decade of trading.
They are now at stage where they need to add some fresh blood to the sales arm of the business.
The role will loosely speaking pan out as follows;
-4 days field based with new and existing customers
-1 day office based for meetings, admin, paperwork etc
-Sales of new machinery, refurb contracts, maintenance agreements and spares and consultancy services
-UK and Ireland coverage (not currently Scotland)
-Clients range from a small freehold farm through to large industrial animal feed producers, plastics companies and the materials handling sector in general
-(So on the same day you could be donning your Wellingtons talking to a farmer in a field and then a few hours later you are ‘suited and booted’ presenting to the board of a PLC)
Your profile;
-Sales engineering experience / Capital equipment sales experience
-Experience of dealing with the agricultural sector
-A good understanding of engineering principles
-Ability to present at board level
-Presentable, articulate and personable
In terms of culture, this is a small company with a very hands on sleeves up type environment, where to a large degree you’ll be left to get on with things and you’ll be expected to ‘create’ and ‘self manage’ for the majority of your time. If you are looking for a big slick corporate environment where there’s lots of structure and procedure in place, then this in not for you.
So, interested?
Thank you for your interest.
